Nature and Childhood (Formerly: Growing Old Gracefully)

Posted by: chadcox on: September 3, 2008

I was just talking to a friend on the phone and I reminded myself of something I had written on another blog back in 2005:

There is something very peaceful and serene about my parent’s backyard. Sure, there’s very little grass and lots of pine needles, but there’s something about the image above that I find calming. Maybe it’s memories of childhood: running up and down this pipeline in the summer with friends, making “forts” along the edges, playing hide and seek after sundown (I remember once jumping clear over the height of the chainlink fence while being chased toward base a couple of houses down, an amazing feat!), crazy neighborhood kids, and all the fights and secrets that those trees have overheard. I’ve said before to people that I love trees. I think it’s because they represent permanence and beauty in a world that is constantly shifting and growing old.

PS: I know it’s an ugly picture that is saturated with way too much red.

Election Blues

Posted by: chadcox on: September 3, 2008

I was just reading a blog about a friend’s election frustrations:

I really got sucked into this whole race to the white house. It’s all I can talk about. Now that I’m deeply invested, I remember how pissed off and depressed it makes me. I’m mostly pissed about the fact that I’m a democrat and democrats don’t vote in big numbers like the republicans. I hate that republicans represent the people in a different tax bracket than me, which means they don’t give a shit about my issues. I’m pissed because ours is a losing battle in almost  every election year. I hope to God my belief that America isn’t ready for Obama is untrue so I can put some faith back in this country.

I started replying and it got me to thinking that I couldn’t agree more with her.  Everyone wants change but no one wants to make make it happen (aka: vote!), they just want to bitch when we get a shitty president who can barely speak English, let alone run the country.  I want to believe that this election will see a record number of voters because of its historic nature and I hope that a lot of them vote for Obama.

I was watching the news this morning and the news anchors were saying that according to a poll conducted by CNBC or CNN (of course you have to take polls with a grain of salt) that something like 19% of white people surveyed said they wouldn’t vote for Obama just because he’s black. I refuse to believe that! Haven’t most of us moved past that yet?  I say most because you can’t really count the South, as they’re always ~10 years behind the collective social consciousness.  And that’s coming from someone who is from the south!

I feel change in the air.  I just hope it isn’t the stiff wind blowing out of McCain’s ass.

Fall and All…That

Posted by: chadcox on: August 30, 2008

I was talking to my mom today on the phone and she said that September is almost here and with that, the approach of fall.  What was more important about this though, was the fact that Christmas was almost here!  LT was sitting on the bed next to me reading and we couldn’t help but laugh as she described decorating the entire house this year, now that she has it all to herself.  She talked about putting garland and lights above the cabinets in the kitchen, a tree in every room (except the bathroom, which is fine, she says), and even asked me if I had thought about what I wanted for Christmas.  At this point, LT is covering his face with the blanket trying to stifle his laughter which made me laugh even more.  It got me thinking about the coming months though and how much I love fall.  It’s that time of the year when the heat of summer has passed but the biting cold of winter has yet to come.  It’s the season of festivals, of pumpkins, of Thanksgiving (my favorite!), and changing leaves.  So that got me thinking about my favorite fall albums.  Yes, despite what you’ve been told, everything is about music:

Sherri Shepherd Should Disappear?

Posted by: chadcox on: August 29, 2008

This is what Bill Maher, host of the HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher, had to say about Sherri Shepherd. Ouch:

The world is flat! In stores now!!

The world is flat! In stores now!!

TV Guide: Who just needs to go the hell away?

Maher: Sherri Shepherd! The one who said the Earth isn’t round? First, we know it’s round because, like Sherri Shepherd, it can be seen from space. Secondly, to me this is child abuse. If you [can't] tell your children if the Earth is flat or not…this is why this country is in such trouble. We’re bringing up ignorant children because they have ignorant parents.

Sure, some of us were thinking something like that when she said it, but man…that was harsh!  I wonder what The View ladies will have to say about this?

Acoustic Loveliness

I love Katy Perry and in particular this song from her CD.  It’s called “Mannequin” and in it she talks about relationship complications.  This acoustic version is very pretty and shows that she’s not just a fabricated pop tart, but that she actually has talent!
