Nature and Childhood (Formerly: Growing Old Gracefully)

Posted by: chadcox on: September 3, 2008

I was just talking to a friend on the phone and I reminded myself of something I had written on another blog back in 2005:

There is something very peaceful and serene about my parent’s backyard. Sure, there’s very little grass and lots of pine needles, but there’s something about the image above that I find calming. Maybe it’s memories of childhood: running up and down this pipeline in the summer with friends, making “forts” along the edges, playing hide and seek after sundown (I remember once jumping clear over the height of the chainlink fence while being chased toward base a couple of houses down, an amazing feat!), crazy neighborhood kids, and all the fights and secrets that those trees have overheard. I’ve said before to people that I love trees. I think it’s because they represent permanence and beauty in a world that is constantly shifting and growing old.

PS: I know it’s an ugly picture that is saturated with way too much red.
